# Slack Connect
## Overview
You can now **integrate Slack Connect channels into Glue**, allowing you to continue conversations with clients, partners, and vendors who are inside Slack without ever leaving Glue. This integration is included in your subscription at no extra cost.
**Some key points to remember:**
* With this integration, you can bring in Slack Connect channels as Glue “external groups” and participate from Glue.
* You can already message other Glue users outside your workspace for free. External users can be invited to message with you by using their email address to send them a thread or add them to a group. They will receive an email to create a free Glue account, and they do **not** count toward your subscription cost.

## How It Works
#### Sync behavior across the apps

Because of Slack’s API limitations, a Glue thread sent to a Slack Connect channel can only address that one channel (i.e. no multi‑group or multi‑user threads). Glue normally supports multi‑recipient threads, but not in this context.

#### Limitations & Gotchas
* When using a Glue thread in one of these shared Slack connect channels, you cannot reply to the thread with another thread. You will receive an error message. Only message replies are supported.
* You cannot edit group membership or rename/delete the group from within Glue — those actions must be done in Slack.
* You cannot mention Slack groups or external users outside the Slack Connect channel.
* Threads can only be sent to the one Slack Connect channel, they cannot be multi-addressed to other Glue groups, people or slack channels.
There is currently **no limit** on the number of Slack Connect channels you can import and **no known message rate limits** (sync usually completes in ≤1 second).
* **Private Channels:** To sync message history from private Slack channels, you must add the **@Glue** app user to those channels. Without adding @Glue to the private channel, message history will not be synced.

## Setup Guide
### Enabling Slack Connect for your Glue Workspace
Admins can set up the Slack Connect integration for their workspace. **You will start in Glue, and follow a guided wizard.** In case you get stuck on any step or need any additional help, you can reference the steps below. Each step is aligned with the number that shows up in the wizard.

You will need to be switching back and forth between Glue and Slack while you set this up, so we recommend having both open in browsers that you can have side by side

#### Step 0: In Glue: Initiate the Slack Connect setup wizard
1. Go to **Workspace Settings** in Glue by clicking on your workspace name in the upper left, and then choosing the workspace you want to set this up for.
2. Click the **Slack Connect** tab.
3. Click **“Get Started”** to launch the integration wizard.
4. Review the overview of the process and then click **“I’m ready”**
#### Step 1: In Slack: Create a Slack app
1. Review the Glue wizard instructions and then click next to bring up Glue’s app manifest (you will need this soon).
2. Log in to Slack and go to **Your Apps** (via [api.slack.com/apps](https://api.slack.com/apps)).
3. Click **“Create an App”** → **“From a manifest”**.
4. Choose your Slack workspace and click **Next**.
5. You will see a JSON code manifest that needs to be replaced with the manifest from Glue.
#### Step 2: In Glue + Slack: Update the app manifest
1. Copy the **Glue app manifest JSON** (provided by Glue in the wizard).
2. Go back into Slack and paste in the JSON manifest.
3. In Slack, click **“Next”** → **“Create”**.
4. Now you have a Slack app! Next step is to connect it to Glue.
#### Step 3: In Glue + Slack: Copy Slack app credentials into Glue
1. In the Slack app’s **Basic Information** page, you will need to copy these values one by one and paste them into Glue. For any value that is hidden, you will need to click “show” before you can copy it.
1. App ID
2. Client ID
3. Client Secret
4. Signing Secret
2. In Glue’s wizard, paste those credentials into the appropriate fields.
3. Click **“save and connect.”**
#### Step 4: In Slack: Verify that Glue can receive messages from Slack
1. Go back to Slack and Find the tab on the left panel that says “**Event Subscriptions”**
2. Click **Retry** to verify the webhook.
#### Step 5: In Glue + Slack: Authorize the app
1. In Glue, you will now see a status update that the connection was successful. Click **“next.”**
2. Click the “Authorize in Slack” button to authorize the connection between your Glue account and Slack account. This is the step that all users will need to take to authorize their accounts.
3. You will be directed to a Slack authorization page, click **“allow.”**
4. Back in Glue, you will see a confirmation that you are connected and you can click **“Done.”**
#### All set! Confirm & Test
1. You will now see your configuration settings under Slack Connect settings in Glue.
2. Go back to your Glue inbox and you will now see Slack Connect channels that you belong to under External Groups in Glue.
1. Message history will not show up in these groups, but any new messages will start to sync right away.
3. Remind all of your workspace users to individually authorize their Glue accounts to use Slack Connect.
### Enabling Slack Connect as a user
1. Go to **Workspace Settings** in Glue by clicking on your workspace name in the upper left, and then choosing the workspace you want to connect with Slack.
2. Click the **Slack Connect** tab.
3. Click “Sign in”
4. You will be directed to a Slack authorization page, click **“allow.”**
5. You will now be able to see all Slack Connect channels you belong to under your Glue Groups.

## Removing / Disabling Slack Connect
#### As an Individual User
1. Navigate to **Workspace Settings → Slack Connect**.
2. Click **“Sign Out”** to revoke your personal Slack authorization.
#### At the Workspace / Admin Level
1. In Glue’s **Workspace Settings → Slack Connect**, click **“Remove”** (only available to admins).
2. After removal, go to Slack → **Your Apps** → find the Glue integration → click **Delete App**.
* **Important:** Always remove the integration in Glue **before** deleting the Slack app to avoid a broken state.

## FAQ & Troubleshooting
#### Should I delete the Slack app directly from Slack when removing integration?
No — you must first remove the Slack Connect integration from Glue. Deleting the Slack app prematurely can leave Glue in a broken state.
#### I made a mistake during setup. What do I do?
1. Remove Slack Connect from Glue (admin step).
2. Delete the custom Slack app.
3. Re-run the setup wizard from scratch.
#### I don’t see a Slack Connect tab / option in my settings.
Confirm you have Glue workspace admin permissions to set up the Slack Connect integration. Once the Slack Connect integration is set up, all users in the workspace will be able to authorize their account to access it.
#### Why can’t I mention some users or groups?
Slack’s API only permits mentions to users who are members of the Slack Connect channel. Mentions of external users or Slack groups are not supported.
#### What happens to threads with multiple recipients?
Because Slack doesn’t allow threads to span multiple channels or users, Glue will restrict such threads to only the Slack Connect channel itself.
